Breitling, one of the most fabled watches manufacturers in the world, was founded in 1884.  Their expertise and experience can be vastly noticed within the three different categories of watches they’ve created so far: the Breitling for Bentley, Navitimer and SuperOcean.

The Swiss manufacturer has brought extremely important innovations to this respective market, with a huge impact in the watch making business. Besides, their role in the development of the wristwatch chronograph is unimaginably serious, as Breitling is the only major watches manufacturer in the world to equip all its models with chronometer-certified movements.

The first watch brand ever to enter the outer space was Breitling, with the Navitimer Cosmonaute chronograph, accompanying the Aurora 7 flight more than half a century ago, on the 24th of May 1962. To celebrate the fabled event, the brand has now released a limited edition Navitimer Cosmonaute.

The Mercury Space Program has taken place sometime during 1961, with Lieutenant Commander Scott Carpenter as one of the original astronauts taking part at it. He had approached Breitling with the idea of embodying a 24-hour dial, instead of a regular 12-hour one. Thus, the 24 hour Navitimer Cosmonaute has come to life, being worn in 1962 by Mr. Carpenter along the Aurora 7 flight, during which they’ve orbited the Earth three times.

The watch has been manufactured and assembled entirely within the company’s workshops, incorporating a high-tech Manufacture Breitling movement. It boasts a 24-hour display in order to make it easier to distinguish between nights and days, a manual-winding mode and two nods to the genuine 1962 chronograph

. It also features the Aurora 7 mission insignia stamped on the back case, which also includes a handy Fahrenheit / Celsius degree conversion scale. Based on the Caliber 02, the “world’s best chronograph movement” was meticulously created by Breitling’s engineers and watchmakers, its ultimate precision being confirmed through a chronometer certificate proven by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute aka COSC.

It serves a pilot best, having included the fabled circular slide rule in order to assist airborne navigation-related operations. The strapping can be chosen from crocodile leather, Navitimer or Barenia leather.

This anniversary limited edition will be available in 1962 pieces worldwide, sporting a black dial with silver counters. It includes a dial motif created using a “par epargne” process, with sterling silver at its base. The watch’s power reserve can last for as long as 70 hours, while the steel case can resist to pressures up to 3 bars.

The bi-directional rotating bezel, with an imprinted circular slide rule along with cambered sapphire crystal, anti-reflective on both sides, definitely makes it something very pleasurable to look at.

How To Tell a Fake Breitling

Crazu.net - How to tell a Fake Wrist Watch, Breitling or Similar 1

From practically the first steps upon debarkation of the world travelers from the trains and boats and planes, the (mostly) tourist are inundated, bombarded with folks hawking junk, some of which is fake.  Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t know a Gucci bag from a duffle bag, or a Hermes scarf from a Shemagh, the headgear of choice for warriors in sandy environments (the latter of which I have relabeled because it is easier to say: Mandana), but I do know a little bit about wrist watches.  My brand of choice is Breitling, but the same criteria for inspection apply to any high end watch.

Crazu.net - How to tell a Fake Wrist Watch, Breitling or Similar 2

How to tell a fake Breitling?  An often asked question.  I ask the question somewhat differently: how to keep from buying a fake Breitling?  Before I go into my ideas of how to not get ripped off when wanting to buy a real Breitling, let me first explain: I do not hold out myself as an expert on Breitling or on any other brand time keeping piece; and am not a horologist by any stretch of the imagination.  Not sure why, but I have been fascinated with the notion of time, man made as it is, for as long as I can remember.  Everybody deserves one little quirk, right?  Breitling has been the object of my time piece fascination for almost 30 years, and I read as much as I can about the brand.  Below are the results of some of that reading.

To the issue: How to keep from buying a fake Breitling?  The first two hints at the top of my list are so fundamental I feel a little goofy just writing them down.  1) Do not buy your Breitling from anybody other than an Authorized Dealer, and certainly 2) Never buy a Breitling online (read: sight unseen).  Having said the latter, I do admit to buying my first Breitling, the Navitimer Pluton 3100, out of a Sporty’s Pilot Shop’s catalog, but that was back in the 80’s and times were different then and Sporty’s had and still has to this day an excellent reputation.

Number 3) on my list is: know the specifications of the Breitling model in which you have interest and are considering purchasing.  The specs on any Breitling model are published all over the place and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding these specs.  That list of specs could include: physical dimensions (face, lugs, etc.) and weight (without the bracelet/strap); characteristics of the hands (How many? Appearance?  Pin features?; What the Breitling logo and other writing on the face is supposed to look like? (note: a misspelling of anything, front or back, on the Breitling is a dead giveaway that it’s a fake);  Appearance and function of the bezel?

Number 4):  There are a few hard to see and not obvious “tells” stamped on some Breitling models.  A very common tell is a stamped letter “B” in the Breitling font situated, when the bezel is in its home position, between the 11 and 12 o’clock positions.  Not there and should be, be cautious.  Another tell is located between the lower lugs on the watch body, that is, below the number 6 on the face, there could be a time stamp such as “5104 B5” the meaning of which is manufactured the 51st week of the 04 year.  I have no idea what the B5 means…???

Crazu.net - How to tell a Fake Wrist Watch, Breitling or Similar 6Crazu.net - How to tell a Fake Wrist Watch, Breitling or Similar 7

Number 5):  For the last 30 years or so, Breitling reference numbers had specific meaning, designating a few basic characteristics of the time piece.  For example, take the SuperOcean reference number A17360: the A designates the type of material out of which the case is made, in this instance, Stainless Steel; the 17 indicates the type of moment in the time piece, in this meaning, the caliber 17 or eta 2824; the 3 indicates that the chronometer is independently certified; and to tell you the truth, I’m not exactly sure what means the 60 but my best guess is that it indicates an “update” of a previous version…???  The most obvious characteristic might be the first letter designation, the type of material.  How to confirm an independent chronometer certification, I have no idea (paper work might do it but paper work can be fake too, right?)  To verify the movement, you would need to pop the back case, of which I do not recommend you do; let your friendly Authorized Dealer do that.

Number 6):  The ask price.  Let’s face it, if somebody is willing to sell you a Breitling for 50 bucks then you can be pretty sure of a couple of things: the watch is a fake or it is stolen, neither one of which do you want to buy.

I haven’t seen too much fake junk in Costa Rica, and what there is of it is mostly sold out of the street kiosks downtown San Jose; with the possible exception of the registered Burberry plaid.  Suffice to say, if you are at a street kiosk downtown, you already know what they are hawking is fake; that’s a no brainer.  Concentrate on the real souvenirs of Costa Rica, and make sure it doesn’t say anywhere on in Made in China, and you will be just fine.  Pura vida
